MIDWEEK RED TIDE UPDATE (January 6, 2009)


No water samples have been received so far this week from the east coast of Florida or northwest Florida.

In southwest Florida, no Karenia brevis was detected in water samples collected alongshore of Sarasota and Collier counties. Sampling will continue this week and complete results will be available in the next scheduled status report on Friday, January 9.


REGIONAL RED TIDE SUMMARIES (December 31, 2008)   East Region:  No water samples were received this week from the east coast of Florida.

Northwest Region:  Water samples collected this week from western Choctawhatchee Bay in response to reports of reddish discolored water contained no Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism. No other samples were received this week from northwest Florida.

Southwest Region: No Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was detected this week in water samples collected alongshore between Pinellas and Collier counties. Elevated concentrations of K. brevis likely remain in the vicinity of the lower Florida Keys, however due to the shortened work week no samples were received from this area. No impacts have been reported.


The FWRI Red Tide Status Line is now available to callers to hear a recording detailing red tide conditions throughout the state. FWRI updates the recording each Friday by 5 p.m. after sampling efforts for the week have been completed and analyzed.
