FLORIDA RED TIDE STATUS


MIDWEEK RED TIDE UPDATE (November 18, 2008)

No Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was detected in water samples collected early this week at Cape Canaveral along the east coast of Florida.

Water samples collected late last week from the western end of Choctawhatchee Bay (Okaloosa County) in northwest Florida contained no Karenia brevis.

In southwest Florida, very low concentrations of Karenia brevis have been detected early this week in a water sample collected at Manasota Beach in southern Sarasota County. Additional samples collected alongshore of Sarasota County as well as Collier County contained no K. brevis. Offshore samples collected late last week from the Florida Keys also contained no K. brevis. Low concentrations of K. brevis were detected last week, offshore of the Everglades National Park in northern Monroe County, however no sampling of this area has occurred this week. Sampling will continue this week and complete results will be available in the next scheduled status report on Friday, November 21.



REGIONAL RED TIDE SUMMARIES (November 14, 2008)   East Region:  No water samples were received this week from the east coast of Florida.

Northwest Region:  No water samples were received this week from northwest Florida. Water samples collected late last week, south of Shell Point (Wakulla County), contained no Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism.

Southwest Region: Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, were detected this week near New Pass in Sarasota County. All other water samples collected alongshore between Pinellas and Collier counties contained no K. brevis. Additional samples, collected offshore of Sanibel Island in Lee County, also contained no K. brevis.



The FWRI Red Tide Status Line is now available to callers to hear a recording detailing red tide conditions throughout the state. FWRI updates the recording each Friday by 5 p.m. after sampling efforts for the week have been completed and analyzed.
